Bayonne Bridge Is Going up Thanks to Strong Man!

There’s no job that’s too big for Strong Man. Our products protect and secure construction teams and pedestrians without prejudice. So, when it came to the construction of the newly elevated Bayonne Bridge in Bayonne, New Jersey, project leaders turned to Strong Man for safety. And we couldn’t be prouder to play a role in such a historic project.

The Bayonne Bridge was considered a modern marvel when it first opened in 1931. Its construction began in 1928, cost a whopping $10 million dollars, and it’s the fifth-longest steel-arch bridge in the world. But, the modern updates the bridge is receiving are equally impressive. The ongoing project has raised the bridge from 155 ft. to 215 ft. above the Kill van Kull tidal strait to provide more clearance for super-sized container ships.

According to Journalist Corey McDonald of the Jersey Journal: “The ‘Raise the Roadway’ project is being done to enable super-sized container ships that use the expanded Panama and Suez canals to pass underneath and reach local ports. These ‘neo Panamax’ ships are expected to start arriving in the area by the end of this year.” But, the bridge isn’t only for ships and motorists. The Bayonne Bridge will have a 10-foot shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians.

Strong Man’s SBN-22 Safety Debris Netting fit the bill for keeping the project safe. Being one of the most popular products we offer, the cost-effective, UV-treated product spans the bridge in various areas. On February 20th, 2017, the bridge opened its roadway to traffic, giving access to pedestrians for the first time. Using SBN-22 ensures that commuters stay safe as the construction continues.

While the project won’t end until 2019, everyone involved with the Bayonne Bridge can count on Strong Man’s SBN-22 Debris Netting.
